There is much talk today concerning the sad condition of the present state of this generation, the lack of godly morality; all around us sin reigns supreme in the hearts of men!
I am not going to defend anything concerning the present state of things as praise worthy; I only want to draw attention to the fact that men have always demonstrated their capabilities and penchant for evil!!!
Before the great flood of judgment and even immediately afterward God revealed through His revelation, by Moses, that men were not only guilty, but still capable of evil on a scale only limited by man’s imagination – See: Genesis 6:5; 8:21.
The generation of Israel that God brought out of Egypt by His mighty hand was described by Moses as an evil generation as the basis for God’s active penalty of death prior to entering the promised land – See: Deuteronomy 1:35.
After the death of Joshua, an evil generation rose up, turning their backs on God and provoking His anger again – See: Judges 2:10-23.
On the day of Pentecost, as Peter and the Apostles would preach to the Jews assembled in the temple complex from every nation under heaven, they would demand that these should be saved from this perverted generation – See: Acts 2:40.
Every generation tends to regard its own time as the most significant! The fact of the matter is this; God has been to man a source of strength and the dwelling place of the faithful in every generation!
Psalm 90:1-2 “Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.2 Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”
Can we, who are to be the light of God, allow the darkness around us to dim our light? Certainly not!
2 Corinthians 4:3-4 “But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.”
Philippians 2:14-15 “Do all things without complaining and disputing, 15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world”
It is one thing to be aware of the evil around us; however, the pressures of the world should only refine us in the service of the Lord!!!
2 Corinthians 4:8-11 “We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.”
Knowing that apart from the world, God will raise us in the end with Christ. Since this spirit of faith rules our existence (if it doesn’t, it should!), we have thanksgiving instead of terror, hope instead of dread, and joy instead of despair.
2 Corinthians 4:16 “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.”
As the world around us grows darker, it is not the time for us to grow dim along with it (defeatism); instead, it is the opportunity for us, God’s children, to shine brightest!
Note: I am always amazed how many children of God through Christ fail to see the significance of their being just one light (you and me) in the midst of darkness! How many square feet does a single bulb illuminate? This simple understanding should drive us to be far more diligent to shine. Failing to comprehend this diminishes our light in indifference or defeat!!!
Yet, if we are engaged in the abhorrence of evil, and the unfettered sharing of the truth of God’s word, we an effect change; one soul at a time! One vote at a time! Etc…
The world may be down, but we are never out; there may be great pressure, but we are never crushed, because we are renewing our minds day by day to that perfect will of God, and living towards eternal life and a time when corruption will never be seen again!!!
Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
1 Corinthians 15:50 “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.”
1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
Philippians 3:13-15 “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you.”
“Give thanks to God, Who caused light to shine in your heart through the Gospel of Christ” – 2 Peter 1:19-21!
